Best Albums of 2011
I hate to say it, but I’ve been so busy the last 3 months that I’ve fallen behind on new music. Thankfully, Steven obsessively listens to the new stuff, so I have picked up bits and pieces of things I like. Gorilla vs. Bear posted their list, so I figured I would too. Favorites (in no particular order): Unknown Mortal Orchestra - Unknown Mortal Orchestra Real Estate - Days Girls -...

sugar skulls
My darling friend AiLien turned 33 recently. We celebrated by decorating sugar skulls forDía de los Muertos. She made bad ass veggie tacos and a tres leches cake that would make your mother cry.

Salads are my healthy (and lazy) go to choice for lunch. I usually prepare one every morning for Steven and me. I try to incorporate local veggies when possible and I steer clear of iceberg lettuce because it makes me think of junior high. In order to keep them from becoming terribly monotonous, I’m constantly on the prowl for new ideas.  When Mark Bittman wrote for the Times, he offered...

so much earth, so little time
I think I have posted about Randy Martin’s photographs before, but this dude makes me want to quit my job & travel. Speaking of jobs and traveling, a friend sent me a link to Cheley Colorado Camp, which offers summer jobs of all sorts. A big part of me wants to spend a summer working somewhere in the wilderness. I might consider this.

Garden Work
I worked in the garden over the weekend. I was beginning to become really frustrated with myself and our yield. This is the second brutal summer in a row and it was hard to keep anything alive, especially since we did not pay as close attention to our garden as we should have (weeds were ridiculous). Regardless, when I stepped outside Monday morning, it was a beautiful 70 degrees and I was...

screen prints & crafts
I’m obsessed with craft blogs. I want to sew simple skirts, knit a cardigan (still not done with my “Christmas” scarf), and make these washi tape magnets. I am meeting up with a friend this weekend (hopefully) to screen print some Arkansas posters I designed. If I decide to sell them, any money made will go toward my own screen printing setup. Or any other craft endeavor I want...

back to Cali, Cali, Cali
I’m officially on vacation, babies! And, Matt booked a last minute Bill Callahan show at White Water Tavern tonight. Couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate some much needed time off.

growing
Having a garden the past two years has changed my perspective on so many things. I have become much more aware of food, reading multiple books on nutrition and the origins of what we eat. I realize that most of the produce at the grocery store is so manicured. When we pull carrots out of the garden, they do not look like the typical straight and narrow that you see in the supermarket. They are...

Wednesday Wishlist!
My lovely friend Rosemary asked me a few weeks ago if I wanted to conjure up a Wednesday Wishlist for her awesome blog, Rosemary on the TV. I couldn’t resist. I decided to go with a garden theme, since most of my life revolves around food. Check it out here!

weekend in Memphis
Another eventful weekend. I joined my friends K and AiLien on a trip to Memphis. Our first stop for lunch was Gus’ Fried Chicken, as seen on Man Vs. Food. We played tunes on the jukebox while we waited for a table. It was absolutely worth it; it was the best fried chicken I’ve ever had, and it was less than $10. Afterwards, we shopped around a bit, looked at kitties in windows,...

wanderlust
I’m putting my wanderlust to work. I’m not sure how I’m going to make this happen financially, but I’m putting together an itinerary for an extended European trip. Here’s the deal with Europe - if you spend $2000 on a roundtrip flight, the rest is cake. Lodging and food aren’t as hard to come by, and I never pick up souvenirs (just send postcards). So, I figured...

three week whirlwind
I feel like I’ve been very busy the last few weeks. Being busy has led me to poor food choices and less money in my pocket, but it has been fun. Usually that’s what happens during the summer, anyway. Last weekend Steven and I went canoeing and camping at the Buffalo River. I like that he makes me hot oatmeal and Starbucks Via coffee every morning. We are getting camping down to an art...

WatchWatch
douglasmartini: This Dirty Beaches Take Away Show (from the streets of Austin during SXSW) is all kinds of great, and not just because of the made up “Gimmie Some Barbecue” song at the beginning (courtesy of Sandra).
